In the winter of 2005, I took a trip to Narvik, Norway, which is north of the Arctic Circle. Part of my pursuit of extreme winter railroading. The train was basic, coaches and sleepers and a modest cafe car. The train was well patronized; the distances are substantial (the train leaves Stockholm at 6 pm and arrives in Narvik in the early afternoon the next day) and the road conditions poor. Air servvice is limited as well. Most of the trip looks and feels like a trip through the interior of Maine in winter, but the approach to Narvik, where the rail line descends down a stunning fjord, is as good as mountain railroading gets.
