Antarctica: These images were taken in January 2006, which is summer in Antarctica. It is a long trip, a flight to Buenos Aires (twelve hours from Dulles) and then another four hours to Ushuaia ("Fin del Mundo," "end of the earth"). Tierra del fuego ("land of fire") is one of the most stunning places in the world, with stunning, snow capped mountains. From Ushuaia it is some 600 miles across the Drake Channel to the Antarctica Penisula, across some of the roughest seas in the world. The ship made landings each day and small groups rotated going ashore; protecting the pristine beauty of the land was taken very seriously. From the Antarctica Penisula, the ship traveled back across the Drake Channel to Cape Horn and then proceded along the west coast of Chile, a remote and beautiful place that rivals the fjords of Norway for dramatic scenery. Truly a trip of a lifetime.
